This course is designed to allow students to develop considerate proficiency in using desktop applications and software to develop a variety of printed publications. Students are expected to analyze pertinent information in order to create a product capable of effectively communicating the desiring message to the target audience. Students will learn how to balance fonts, layout, and other design elements to create personal resumes, newsletters, business cards, and other documents on the personal computer. Career & Financial Survival Skills | Grades 9-12 In this course, students explore career choices, and learn what qualifications and responsibilities are necessary to maintain employment and become a productive worker. In addition, students learn about personal and financial resources, and how to effectively use these resources. Topics to be explored include employment readiness, career exploration, financial planning, and budgets, completing job applications, W-2 wage and tax statements, credit, savings vs. spending, investments, insurance, banking, consumer awareness and other related topics. |
Full-Year CoursesWall Street Investments | Grades 10-12
This course examines businesses before they transition to their Initial Public Offering (IPO), when they become a publically traded company. Through playing the Stock Market Game, students will get a broad overview of business organizations and operations, and learn about the New York Stock Exchange, Wall Street, and financial markets. The course will also introduce students to business organization’s use of bonds, credit, real estate, and other investments. Students examine how businesses are organized to provide a product or service, and become acquainted with the activities commonly utilized by most businesses that enable them to meet the customers’ needs and demands. Students will be better informed to make investment decisions, and they will have the opportunity to be an individual investor. As such, a logical portfolio commensurate with the financial goals of the individual is stressed. Today’s business organizations rely on current technology and economic trends. Financial information available both in published and online format will be used. Sports Marketing & Management | Grades 9-12 This course focuses on marketing and management principles as applied to the world of sports and entertainment. Students will learn a realistic approach to fundamental marketing principles and practices using the ownership, marketing and management of a sports franchise in the National Football League, National Basketball League or Major League Baseball as a model. They will analyze marketing and management theories in the areas of demographics, product research, development, promotional mix, sales, advertising, branding, corporation licensing, public relations and the structuring of a corporate entity. Current events and case problems are integrated into the class discussions. Students will learn how to operate their sports franchise on a multi-million dollar budget, experience conflicts in the board room and learn how to collaborate with other executives. Students will also learn how to present their marketing plans to an executive board. Business of Music & Entertainment | Grades 9-12 This course focuses on the essentials of the music and entertainment fields, including marketing structure, distribution, promotions, and marketing strategies. The course will examine the business management and marketing strategies of recorded music in broadcast and commercial media, such as radio, film, television, and the Internet. Students are expected to create and execute a marketing plan to effectively promote a final project in the music and entertainment field, such as, but not limited to, a drama production, a charity fundraiser, or a talent show. Manage Your Money | Grades 10-12 This course will introduce topics that have been identified as one of the 21st century skills that all graduates should obtain. Students will understand the complexities of money management including aspects of personal finance, economics, and business decisions. Students will learn about banking, finance charges, APRs, credit, home buying and mortgage options, investment options, and retirement planning. They will also learn about car loans and various types of insurance (car, renters, and life), college loans, health insurance, 401Ks, 403bs, and IRAs, among other topics. All topics covered are vitally important to everyone as a life skill. School Store | Grades 10-12 In this course, students will learn the management and marketing operations of a retail store by actively participating in the purchasing, pricing, and selling of merchandise for the School Store (the IBuc Shop). Students experience first-hand the process of product development in conjunction with working with local vendors to develop and promote products to be sold in the IBuc Shop. Please note that this course cannot be added to a student’s schedule after the first two weeks of school. Prerequisite: One Business course and chairperson recommendation. |
The following courses are offered as dual credit courses through Farmingdale State College. Each of the following courses, with the exception of UHS Virtual Enterprise, is linked to one 3-credit course at Farmingdale State College (Virtual Enterprise is linked to three 3-credit courses). Students can begin to create a college transcript for each course for only $140 (per 3-credit course), with a 50% reduction in tuition rates for students that qualify for free or reduced lunch.UHS Business Ownership & Marketing | Grades 11-12
This honors level course offers students the opportunity to earn 3 college credits. Business Ownership and Marketing provides students with a basic foundation in the starting and managing of a small business. Students will explore entrepreneur characteristics, opportunity, feasibility, market research and analysis, marketing plans, price and promotion strategy, purchase and inventory management, human resources management, and social and ethical responsibility. Students will visit several local businesses to gain insight into what is involved in starting and operating a business. Students who are 16 years or older may earn additional credit toward the business sequence by participating in the work experience program and completing 300 hours of supervised training at a job. UHS Advertising & Promotions | Grades 11-12 This honors level course offers students the opportunity to earn 3 college credits. This course shall introduce students to the business of advertising in a contemporary global environment. The course will explore elements of media selection and copywriting within the parameters of internal budgets, management, and the application of actual advertising creation. In addition, students will create advertising, integrating the roles of the creative director and marketing manager. Case studies will focus on modern products and brands. This course is a suggested pre- or co-requisite for students interested in working in the IBuc Shop. UHS College Business Law | Grades 11-12 This honors level course offers students the opportunity to earn 3 college credits. An introduction into the nature and sources of law; the role of the legal system; the law of torts and crimes; the law of contracts; and real and personal property. Students are introduced to the fundamental as well as advanced principles of contract law and the application of these principles in various areas such as sales, employment, real estate, and insurance. Emphasis is placed on learning commonly used business terms and skills. These concepts will be applied to practical case studies in the focus of law and management. UHS College Accounting | Grades 11-12 This honors level course offers students the opportunity to earn 3 college credits. Students will explore the analysis, interpretation, and preparation of financial statements for a business. Fundamental accounting concepts and principles are covered through an understanding of the following topics: accounting as an information system; analyzing a transaction; the accounting cycle; accounting for both service enterprises and merchandising businesses; deferrals and accruals; reversing entries; systems design; accounting for cash, receivables, temporary investments, and inventory; and payroll accounting. Students will apply concepts to the preparation of special journals, subsidiary ledgers, worksheets, and financial statements. UHS Management Theories & Practices | Grades 11-12 This honors level course offers students the opportunity to earn 3 college credits. Students will develop an understanding of innovative management in an ever-changing world, and they will learn how change demands innovation, where innovation requires successful managers to think productively. Individual behavior in organizations, employee motivation, and performance and business ethics as they pertain to human resource management will be addressed. Topics include innovative management, corporate culture, ethics and social responsibility, managerial planning, goal setting, decision making and leadership, managing change and innovation, diversity, communication, leading teams, and evaluating quality and performance. Students will learn the 21st century skills needed to be flexible leaders and to lead change. UHS Virtual Enterprise | Grades 11-12 This is the capstone course for development in the career path of entrepreneurship, finance, and/or marketing. Virtual Enterprise is a simulated business that is set up and run by students to prepare them for working in a business environment. The students will determine the nature of their business, its products and services, its management and structure, and learn the daily operations of a business under the guidance of a consultant (the teacher) with the support of real business partners. The workplace simulation enables students to understand how employees, workgroup teams, and departments interact with each other and work together for the success of the company. Students engage in virtual trading with thousands of firms throughout the nation and the world to gain an appreciation of the business principles in a global economy. This course empowers and motivates students to develop a range of academic and business skills that will prepare them for success in employment, education, and the business community. This course meets for a double period every day. |
